Synopsis via Goodreads: The sizzling second installment of the White House series, by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katy Evans.

We fell in love during the campaign.
The stakes were high.
Reputations could have been ruined.
Scandal hovered over us like a cloud.
Now the man I love is the President of the United States of America.
And its not my vote he is after.
He wants it all.
My heart. My body. My soul.
He wants me by his side.
In the White House.
Normalcy will be gone from my life, privacy forgotten.
I am only twenty three. I just wanted to play a part in history. But it seems like history wasn’t done with me. The part where I lost my heart to Matthew Hamilton? It was only the beginning…

Mr. President left me on the edge of my seat after it ended with a cliffhanger that nearly broke my heart. Everything was left up in the air and we had no idea what the future held for Matt and Charlotte’s relationships. I was crossing all my fingers and toes hoping these two would get the happily ever after they so longingly deserved and that I would survive the angst train I was about to board!

Commander in Chief picks up right where Mr. President left off, with Matthew Hamilton being announced as the new president of the United States and him and Charlotte Wells realizing that their little affair was slowly coming to an end. But Matt is not willing to let Charlotte go just yet and instead decides to make her his acting First Lady. Just like how he’s won the heart of the American people, Matthew is determined to show Charlotte that he can be the man that she can rely on and hopes to win her heart, too, even if that means putting everything on the line.

Commander in Chief was one of my most anticipated releases for this month and I’m happy to say that it did not disappoint. I don’t know what it is about Matt and Charlotte, but these two just put a cheesy smile on my face and I’ve never met a couple more deserving of an HEA than these two. One thing that surprised me about Commander in Chief was the fact that it was told from dual POVs and we were finally able to get inside of Matt Hamilton’s head. While we got snippets here and there of Matt’s POV in Mr. President, they weren’t enough for me to truly get a feel for his character. I loved that we got to see what Matt was thinking and to get a better understanding of who exactly was the man in the Oval Office.

Once again, Katy Evans slayed my feels with this slow burning romance and I was trying my best to survive all this sexual tension:

Matt and Charlotte make the perfect power couple. Charlotte embodies all the qualities of a First Lady and is willing to do so much to better the lives of the American people, especially the lives of women and children. She is a selfless individual with such a big heart, it is no wonder why Matt fell for her in the first place. Matt Hamilton should be our President! He cares about the American people and the future of America and will do anything to ensure the safety of American citizens. He also cares deeply for Charlotte and I appreciated the fact that he was willing to change his ways and give their relationship a chance. The chemistry between these two is OFF THE CHARTS, hence why I was slowly suffering as I waited for these two to make things official.

My only major complaint about this sequel was that I wished certain aspects of the story would’ve been fleshed out more. In regards to Matt figuring out who murdered his father, I felt like that could’ve been played up more, but instead things were easily resolved. I was waiting for some type of big reveal when Matt found out who murdered his father, but everything was kind of downplayed and done and over with pretty quickly. I loved the romance in this book, don’t get me wrong, but I do feel like maybe if we had toned things down a bit it would’ve allowed for other plot lines to develop more.

Overall, I very much enjoyed seeing Charlotte and Matt’s story come to an end and for them to finally get their happily ever after. Good things comes to those who wait and these two are proof of that. I’m also excited that won’t be the end of the White House series and Evans plans to write more installments focusing on other characters. I can’t even guess who the next book will be about, but I do hope we still get to see my faves, Matt and Charlotte, and hopefully the next book will be a hit as well!

  1. I have read a few books by the author, but they don’t fully work for me. BUT I’m kinda really intrigued by this series. And you know I’m a sucker for slow-burn romance, so I feel like I need to give the author another try!
    Great review, Ari!

    • I know other bloggers have said the same thing about Evans’ Real series (which is why I won’t be reading that series), but the slow-burning is SO GOOD! I hope you enjoy this series a lot more and I can’t wait for you to meet Matt Hamilton!
