Synopsis via Goodreads: Fractions of seconds can do lots of damage. One decision can ruin lives. A blink can be tragic. And loving a Hollister…can hurt like hell.

I would know.

They say the average person can hold their breath under water for two full minutes when pushed to the extremes. Will Hollister has been holding his for years. The oldest of two elite swimming brothers, Will was always a dominant force in the water. But in life, he preferred to let his younger brother Evan be the one to shine.

Evan got the girl, and Will…he got to bury all of the secrets. A brother’s burden, the weight of it all nearly left him to drown.

The daughter of two Olympians, my path was set the day my fingertips first touched water. My future was as crystal clear as the lane I dominated in the pool—swim hard, win big, love a Hollister.

My life with Evan burned bright. He gave me arms to come home to, and a smile that fooled the world into believing everything was perfect. But it was Will who pushed me. Will…who really knew me.

And when all of the pieces fell, it was Will who started to pick them up.

In the end, the only thing that matters are those few precious seconds—and what we decide to do while we still have them in our grasp.

2016 was the year I discovered all the romance authors and with the year coming to a close, I’m adding one more romance author to my favorites list: Ginger Scott. I’ve been meaning to get to Scott’s books for a while and I’m happy that I managed to squeeze in two of her recently published books into my 2016 reads because they were pretty damn good and now I just want to binge read the rest of her works!

Told from dual POVs, Hold My Breath follows the story of Will Hollister and Maddy Woodsen, two childhood friends who are reunited after a tragic loss. After losing everyone he loves, Will is determined to gain back control of his life and takes up Maddy’s father’s offer to help train him for the Olympics. Maddy is not ready to face Will as she still grieving the loss of Evan, the love of her life and also Will’s younger brother. But if she too wants to make it to the Olympics, Maddy is going to have to put aside her hate and train side by side with Will. That’s easier said that done.

Hold My Breath is a romance about love, loss and healing. It may not sound like it from the synopsis, but Hold My Breath low key has second-chance romance vibes going on and SINCE THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TROPES EVER, I knew the chances of me loving this story were very, very good. The thing that first drew me in was Scott’s writing. It’s simplistic, yet emotional and may or may not have been shedding some tears 20% into this book. Even though it’s been a few years since the tragic accident, our characters are still somewhat mourning and this is one of the reasons why this book is such an emotional read. I didn’t expect family to be such an important theme in this book, but because the Hollister and the Woodsen families were so close, Maddy’s family is also trying to find a way to move forward and this loss has also put a strain on Maddy’s relationship with her parents. I loved how we got to see the Woodsen family work out their issues and even though Will has lost his family, he gains another as Maddy’s parents treat him as their own and I LOVED IT! Seriously, my favorite part was seeing this family heal, which is WHY I NEED FAMILY TO PLAY MORE OF AN IMPORTANT ROLE in NA books!

I loved Will right from the beginning. Even though he has lost so much, Will continues to make so many sacrifices for the ones he love. Time and time again, he puts the needs of others before his own, including Maddy’s as he tries to protect her from a secret that would shatter her heart. I can’t find any faults in Will and I could not get enough of his POV. Maddy on the other hand, took some time to warm up to. My main reason for why I didn’t like Maddy at the beginning was her indecisiveness. The whole “I chose the wrong brother, I played it safe” scenario just irked me a little and her going back and forth about her feelings for Evan and Will and which brother she actually loved. I liked Maddy by the end of the book, but I didn’t connect with her character like I did with Will’s. Although I didn’t really care for Maddy, she and Will did have great chemistry and she stood by his side when he needed her most and I enjoyed seeing these two work together to heal their wounds and move forward.

One thing that kept me from loving this book more were the plot twists. I was not a fan of the second plot twist because I FELT LIKE IT WAS OVERKILL! WHY DID THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN?!

Overall, despite my little annoyances, I did very much enjoy my first Ginger Scott book and I’m excited to check out her other works. If you’re in the mood for an emotional romance about healing and a second-chance at true love, I totally recommend checking out Hold My Breath
