A Love Letter to Whiskey by Kandi Steiner

“Jamie was whiskey, that much I was sure of. I couldn’t deny the way he burned, the way his taste lingered. Still, no one warned me that once a whiskey girl, always a whiskey girl. But I was figuring it out.”- B, A Love Letter to Whiskey

Synopsis via Goodreads: It’s crazy how fast the buzz comes back after you’ve been sober for so long.

Whiskey stood there, on my doorstep, just like he had one year before. Except this time, there was no rain, no anger, no wedding invitation — it was just us.

It was just him — the old friend, the easy smile, the twisted solace wrapped in a glittering bottle.

It was just me — the alcoholic, pretending like I didn’t want to taste him, realizing too quickly that months of being clean didn’t make me crave him any less.

But we can’t start here.

No, to tell this story right, we need to go back.

Back to the beginning.

Back to the very first drop.

This is my love letter to Whiskey. I only hope he reads it.

Have you ever fallen in love with a book just because of its title? Is it even possible to be in love with a book’s title? Whether it’s possible or not, I somehow fell madly in love with the title of Kandi Steiner’s newest release, A Love Letter to Whiskey. For 24 hours, this book took over my life and I could not be separated from my eReader. By the time I reached the last page, I was WRECKED. I was RUINED. I was DONE.

A Love Letter to Whiskey is a story about love, sacrifice, heartache and undying love. This love story starts in high school, where Brecks Kennedy fell hard and fast the first day she ran into Jamie Shaw. Over the months, a friendship is formed, but Brecks can’t help but feel like there is something more between the two. As years go by, this friendship grows and they can no longer deny the flame that has sparked. But time has never been on their side and if Brecks and Jamie are going to be together, they are going to have to fight for it.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO EMOTIONALLY FUCKED BY A BOOK IN MY LIFE! To say this book ruined me would be an understatement. This book ripped me a new one and I’m still trying to cover up the scar it has left behind. A Love Letter to Whiskey is a slow-burning, angst-filled romance about a love that destroys. Kandi Steiner’s writing is BEAUTIFUL! Down to the the chapter titles, I loved how she incorporated the theme of whiskey and being drunk off love. I WAS ADDICTED TO HER WORDS AND WITH EACH TURNING PAGE I FELT A NEW HIGH

While I loved the story and the writing, what kept me from rating this book higher were the characters. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Brecks and Jamie…well I like them until I didn’t of course. They are both goal-oriented people who work hard to attain success. BUT I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO FRUSTRATED WITH CHARACTERS that I wanted to pop open my own bottle of whiskey and take a few shots myself!

The indecisiveness, the infidelity, the miscommunication was just all too much for me. I was banging my eReader multiple times hoping that it would somehow knock some sense into these two. I was cursing in multiple different languages because of the stupid and inconsiderate choices these two were making. I understand why Brecks was so hesitant to commit to Jamie, especially after finding out the truth about her own parent’s relationship, but she wasn’t willing to give things a chance until it was too late. These two are the perfect example of what it means to be a “flawed” character and I swear these two tested my patience until the very end.

A Love Letter to Whiskey left me feeling emotionally conflicted and exhausted. I was holding my breath until the very last sentence because I could not predict how this story was going to end. This book was so damn intoxicating and I’m totally checking out Steiner’s other works because I need more of her writing. I can’t say I loved this book, but I can’t say I hated it either. I will say that I want everyone to read it too so y’all can experience the same pain I did. Grab a bottle of whiskey and strap your eReaders to your hand because you’re in for some emotional wreckage with this book.
