“He’s here. I’m here. That’s all we need. It’s our greatest lie.”- Lily, Addicted to You
Synopsis via Goodreads: She’s addicted to sex. He’s addicted to booze…the only way out is rock bottom.
No one would suspect shy Lily Calloway’s biggest secret. While everyone is dancing at college bars, Lily stays in the bathroom. To get laid. Her compulsion leads her to one-night stands, steamy hookups and events she shamefully regrets. The only person who knows her secret happens to have one of his own.
Loren Hale’s best friend is his bottle of bourbon. Lily comes at a close second. For three years, they’ve pretended to be in a real relationship, hiding their addictions from their families. They’ve mastered the art of concealing flasks and random guys that filter in and out of their apartment.
But as they sink beneath the weight of their addictions, they cling harder to their destructive relationship and wonder if a life together, for real, is better than a lie. Strangers and family begin to infiltrate their guarded lives, and with new challenges, they realize they may not just be addicted to alcohol and sex.
Their real vice may be each other.
For the month of August, I decided to binge-read both the Addicted series and the Calloway Sisters series by Krista & Becca Ritchie. I’ve had Addicted to You on my eReader for some time now, but I never got around to reading it, until now. Once again, I am kicking myself in the ass for not starting this series sooner. I AM ALREADY OVER THE MOON IN LOVE WITH THIS SERIES AND I’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN! Let me tell you guys about my feels because I HAVE LOTS OF FEELS! LOTS OF LILO FEELS!
Addicted to You tells the story of two best friends who struggle to keep their addictions a secret by faking a romantic relationship. Lily Calloway is addicted to sex and Loren Hale is addicted to alcohol. Both know that if either of their secrets ever got out, it would ruin their families reputation. So they hide away, playing pretend, both enablers to each other’s addiction. That is until one of them decides that enough is enough, and their game of playing house comes to an end and reality sets in.
I’ve read a decent number of books that revolved around characters struggling with addiction, but this is the first time I’ve read a book where the character is addicted to sex. I had my doubts about this one. I initially thought that this would be another overly dramatic New Adult novel filled with happily ever afters, but I was wrong. BOY, DID THIS BOOK PROVE ME WRONG. THIS IS MORE, SO MUCH MORE, THAN JUST SEX! I love the way the authors handled the topic of addiction. It was realistic, no sugar-coating, you could feel the emotional struggles both our characters were going through as they try to gain control over their lives and tackle their addictions. I like the fact that there were no easy fixes to their problems, that both Lo and Lil would not be magically cured of their addiction. I also liked the fact that neither character was the other’s savior. Lil was not going to fix Lo, and Lo was not going to fix Lil. They could work together on fighting their addiction, but they were going to need professional help if they were going to overcome their problems.
I found the characters to be flawed, complex, and even a bit relatable. While not everyone is going to relate to Lil and her sex addiction, you will still feel her struggle. She was ashamed of who she was and was afraid of how her family would react if they ever found out about her addiction. Her addiction is not one you can see and that’s what makes it so hard for people to understand. Then we have Lo, an alcoholic who refuses to let anyone see the real him. I thought I would hate him, but dammit I freakin’ love Lo. The character development IS SO GOOD! I’m telling you, by the end of this book, YOU WILL LOVE THESE CHARACTERS!
Family plays a MAJOR ROLE throughout this book. If you’re looking for more NA books that are center around this theme, THIS IS IT! The Calloway sisters are a tight bunch and while they may not all get along, they still love each other and are always supporting one another. Lo and his father have a dysfunctional relationship and I’m very interested to see how these two work out their issues and I hope Lo’s father changes for the better. BUT MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOOK ARE THE SECONDARY CHARACTERS! You guys, they are AMAZING. Connor, Rose, Ryke, I can’t get enough and I can’t wait to learn more about them in the Calloway Sisters series.
Addicted to You is an emotional and realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be an addict. I am so ready to see where things go from here because it will only get worse before it can get better. Don’t do what I did and put off reading this series. It’s true New Adult gem that deserves all the love and this series has easily become one of my new FAVORITE series!
