Synopsis via Goodreads: What do you do when your soul mate marries your best friend?

If you’re Kate Evans, you keep your friend Rachel, bond with her kids, and bury your feelings for her husband. The fact that Shane’s in the military and away for long periods helps-but when tragedy strikes, everything changes.

After Rachel, pregnant with her fourth child, dies in a car accident and the baby miraculously survives, Kate upends her entire life to share parenting duties. Then on the first anniversary of Rachel’s death, Kate and Shane take comfort in each other in a night that they both soon regret.

Shane’s been angry for a year, and now he feels guilty too – for sleeping with his wife’s best friend and liking it . . . liking her. Kate’s ability to read him like a book may have once sent Shane running, but their lives are forever entwined and they are growing closer.

Now with Shane deployed for seven months, Kate is on her own and struggling with being a single parent. Shane is loving and supportive from thousands of miles away, but his homecoming brings a betrayal Kate never saw coming. So Kate’s only choice is to fight for the future she deserves – with or without Shane. . .

I’ve been putting off writing this review for two months now. Every time I sit down and attempt to write this review, my blood starts to boil as I am once again reminded how much I HATE THIS DAMN BOOK! Let me just say I originally had no intentions of reading this book. I don’t usually judge a book by its cover, but something in my gut just said that this book was not the book for me. But then, I started seeing all the rave reviews claiming: “heart-breaking”, “tear-jerker”, “slow-burn”. I’m such a goddamn sucker for the tear-jerkers so I decided to see what all the hype was about. I should’ve listened to my gut and stayed the hell away from this book…VERY FAR AWAY!

Unbreak My Heart is told from the dual POV of our two main characters, Kate Evans and Shane Anderson. Since they were young, Kate has had a crush on Shane. Unfortunately, Shane does not feel the same as he has feelings for Kate’s best friend, Rachel. Rachel and Shane end up getting married and starting a family of their own. Kate is still involved in both Rachel and Shane’s lives as she helps to take care of their children, but when tragedy strikes, Kate steps up and becomes more involved in the children’s lives, as well as in Shane’s life. As these two spend more time together, old feelings start to emerge and Kate finds herself once again falling for Shane, and this time, he’s falling for her too.

The overall concept of this book sounded like something I would enjoy: a possible second-chance romance filled with angst, as our two main characters mourn over the loss of the one person they both loved dearly. I was ready to have my heart ripped open. I was ready for the waterworks. WHERE THE FUCK WERE THE TEARS?!

My first issue was with the REPETITIVE AND OVERLY DRAMATIC PLOT. I was side-eyeing this damn book right from the prologue because something was not right. Shane claims to have never having feelings for Kate, but when he sees her on stage singing, he is SUDDENLY amazed by her beauty and voice. He is thinking all of this WHILE STILL MARRIED TO RACHEL! Rachel’s not even dead yet, like can we hold the fuck up on the insta-lust and let things develop naturally?! After Rachel’s death, we fast forward to a year later and we see Shane and Kate trying to hold down the fort, trying to keep things as normal as possible for the children. I really wished that we could’ve been able to see these two characters actually mourn Rachel’s death instead of just fast-forwarding to one year later. It was too rushed and we jumped from Shane being happy with Rachel, to Shane lusting after Kate. WAY TOO MUCH TOO FAST!

The story is so repetitive, like a damn Taylor Swift song because one minute they’re fighting, the next minute they’re fucking, RINSE AND REPEAT! The drama was real, I almost threw my phone on the train tracks and left it there because I couldn’t deal with this shit show.

THIS IS NOT A DAMN ROMANCE! I was not feeling all the feels when it came to these two. Everything was forced and with the constant bickering, I really couldn’t tell if these two really cared about each other if it was just all about the sex. Sorry not sorry, but there’s nothing swoon-worthy or heart-breaking about this romance.

Then we have our characters, Kate and Shane. First, let’s talk about Kate. I really liked Kate at the beginning. She sacrifices so much for those little munchkins and she deserved so much more. But it wasn’t long until I became annoyed with her character. Kate takes everything lying down, letting Shane walk all over. He disrespects her a number of times throughout this book, talks down to her and constantly reminds her that she will never be a mother to his children. I waited and waited AND WAITED for her to step up and put Shane in his place and when she finally does, it doesn’t take long for her to forgive him and all is well again. Kate could’ve been such a great character, but I wish she would’ve stepped up more and stood up for herself sooner rather than later.

Shane is a misogynistic prick who needs to get his ego checked. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING APPEALING ABOUT SHANE. He constantly treats Kate like crap and overreacts over the littlest things she does. She’s taking care of your kids while your away on deployment, GIVE HER THE DAMN RESPECT SHE DESERVES! The funny thing is that at the beginning, Shane is repulsed by Kate as he complains that she is always in sweats and never has herself pulled together. Then he does a complete 180 and finds sweats attractive…REALLY? I can’t buy that nonsense and it’s why I couldn’t feel the genuine connection between these two. Slow-burning romance? No, more like crash and burn!

The only thing saving this book were the children. These munchkins were so adorable and I loved reading all the scenes involving them. I really didn’t like the fact that they were put in the middle of Kate and Shane’s drama. Those kids deserved so much better after all they’ve been through and seeing them having to choose between Kate and Shane was horrible.

That about sums up my hate for this book. Unbreak My Heart has earned the label as being “MY WORST READ BOOK OF 2016” and while it may have been a hit with other readers, this book was definitely not for me. I don’t think I will be picking up the sequel. I don’t care enough about the secondary characters to give the sequel a chance and I’m so glad I can finally put this nightmare of a book behind me!
