Things That Piss Us Bookworms OFF! | Rants & Rambles

Rants (4)

Hey Bloggers!

Welcome back to:

Rants (6)

Rants & Rambles is a weekly feature where I hope to share my own personal thoughts and opinions about both bookish and blogging related topics. As stated, these are MY OWN opinions and while you can choose to disagree with it, I hope that you at least respect it.

This week on Rants & Rambles I want to discuss:

DINING IN TOKYO (3)

From cover changes to instalove, we bookworms are a HARD set to please! We don’t take kindly to change. We are ruthless bunch, we take no prisoners…ok wait, I’m going a little overboard with this. Long story short, books are like our children and we turn into mama bears when others start to mess with them (STOP THE MADNESS!). Here are a few things that piss me off and irk my nerves when it comes to books.

Cover & Format Changes

What’s that saying? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Cover changes can be a hit or miss (mostly miss) and for the most part, I don’t really mind them because if I don’t like the cover, I will most likely place the book somewhere I can’t see it. Format change though, that’s a different story. One of my most favorite series growing up was Vampire Kisses series by Ellen Schreiber. This cute little series not only got a cover change, but the publishers also started to produce the books as paperbacks. That was fine since we could still get the other books in hardback, all but ONE of course! The fifth book in this series is not only a paperback, it also has the new covers and I HATE IT! I’ve looked everywhere to get the original version, but alas, it is nowhere to be found and now I can’t even look at that series because I am STILL upset!

Instalove

I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to instalove. While I don’t completely hate it, I don’t exactly love it either. I don’t mind it so much when instalove is present in standalones. I don’t want to read a book filled with sexual tension just to have the characters get together at the end and then it is THE END! We need that fast-paced romance sometimes just to get things rolling. BUT, I ABSOLUTELY HATE instalove in series! NO, JUST NO! The couple has a few books in order to know about each other, let them struggle a bit please so when they do finally happen, it can be more of a rewarding read!

Sinking ‘Ships’

#TeamCHAOLAENA, this one’s for you! When I started to read Throne of Glass, I had just started blogging and I didn’t know much about the series. I didn’t know about the ‘ships’, but by the end of Crown of Midnight, I was shipping #TeamChaolaena. Not going to lie, it hurt when this ship sunk. Even though I am totally on board the #TeamRowaelin ship, I did hope that Chaol at least still had a fighting chance, but now we know that they are NEVER going to happen and I have come to terms with this. DAMN ICEBERGS!

CLIFFHANGERS!

Stop the HEART PALPITATIONS!! Cliffhangers are the worst, especially we have to wait A YEAR for the sequel (The Wrath & the Dawn!). It hurts inside and cliffhangers usually lead to crying and me throwing the ereader or book across the room. I am not a patient person, I NEED ANSWERS like NOW! Stop messing with my emotions, just give me MY HAPPY ENDING!

Unexpected Deaths

To this day, I have still not gotten over the death that happens in Crown of Midnight. I still don’t know how I did not see that coming, even though it was hinted at in previous chapters. I understand why that character’s death was needed as it set in motion a number of events, but that doesn’t mean it hurts ANY LESS! I needed to mourn after that chapter and didn’t start the second part of CoM until two days later.

SPOILERS!

This one’s for everyone who has SPOILED me for The Raven Boys series! Dammit people, put a SPOILER ALERT warning! I have not picked up this series because of the spoilers and it sucks because everyone keeps raving about it and I want to rave TOO! Please, just warn a gal when you’re about to share a spoiler, or at least keep it in the DMs!

Co-Dependent Characters

Damsel in distress? Superman-complex? No thanks! I don’t like characters that are ‘need’ another person in order to ‘fix themselves’ or feel ‘whole’ again. You should want to change for YOURSELF, not for SOMEONE ELSE! I have nothing against teamwork, but if a character is looking at the other person as if that person has all the answers or the magic pill that will fix everything, then I can’t take them seriously and will most likely end up not liking the book.

Unsatisfying Endings

You spend MONTHS, sometimes YEARS dedicating your time and emotions to a series and then you reach the end…& it is a total FLOP! I hate this. I tend to block out the endings, especially if I really liked the rest of the books in the series, or sometimes I even rewrite my own. If I do decide to reread the books in said series, I will read all of them but the last one, that way I can just remember the good parts with my own reimagined ending and I will not have to face disappointment time and time again.

These are just a few things that irk my nerves when it comes to books. I could list a few more things that irk my nerve when it comes to books, but I’ll save those for a later post!

That is all for this week’s Rants & Rambles. I hope you enjoyed my random thoughts!

What are some things that piss you off when it comes to books?

Let me know in the comments!

  2. You nailed this one 😛

Cover changes are the worst. I use to think it was just format changes that where the worst (it sucks when you have a mix of paperbacks and hardcovers) but when they have different cover style…ugh the horror!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets annoyed by co-dependent characters–even worse is when it is an instalove co-dependency!

  3. I could relate to every single one of these! Especially the ship sinking one!! Seriously I was shipping Choalena from book one and then COM I was left squealing with delight that they got together but then it sunk in QOS! But I am on board the Rowaelin ship but I’m still dissapointed that Choalena won’t happen!

  4. Insta-love, co-dependent characters, unsatisfying endings , spoilers… all eurgh and make me want to throw something! Combined and you have a book I will not be able to stand ahah.
Cliffhangers and unexpected deaths on the other hand can be epic! Often I will still be furious because my bookworm heart isn’t up for that emotional trauma, but I love them ❤ they leave lasting impressions and keep the book in your mind.
This is such a great post, I can definitely relate! Many books came to mind when reading it (and TV shows – the final GIF was perfect for my thoughts on that show's ending)

    • YES! I usually end up throwing the book, sorry book. My heart can’t handle cliffhangers. There is usually a lot of screaming and pacing after I read a book with a cliffhanger. & then the theories start flowing & the madness BEGINS! hahaha.

  5. AGH, I TOTALLY AGREE! Even though I’m quite a fan of book spoilers and I sometimes like character deaths even though it makes me want to rip my hair out. BUT STILL. Cliffhangers frustrate me to no end, too, but if I read a series that’s already complete, I don’t have a problem with it though. 😉

P.S.: AND INSTALOVE. Gah, I hate it. Although some instaloves are written very well, most are just really… meh. :/ I like love that builds after at least weeks of being with each other.

    Fun post, Ari!

    • Slow-burning romances are some of my faves! Even though most of the time I end up just yelling “kiss her already” they are still better than instalove. Cliffhangers are killer for me, especially when I have to wait. Pure TORTURE!

      Thanks for reading! 🙂

  6. Cover changes are just so annoying. I have the whole series all looking good on the shelf and then BAM the last book is totally different. It’s even more annoying when the books are different heights… why, just why 😦

  7. Cliff hangers should be BANNED! In both paid works and fanfiction!
I am a huge fan of The Earth’s Children series by Jean M. Auel (Clan Of the Cave Bear, et al) I think it took her 30 years to write six books! You want to talk anticipation? Cliffhangers? While her books weren’t necessarily all angst, and we knew there would be another book, it totally sucks to have to wait 8 and 10 years for the next one!
